Consider a Curbless Shower for Easy Access

Curbless walk-in showers are an increasingly popular choice for aging in place designs. With no step or threshold to navigate, they make it easier to enter and exit—whether you're using a walker, wheelchair, or simply want to reduce tripping hazards.

Just keep in mind: curbless showers require careful planning to prevent water from escaping into the rest of the room. A properly sloped floor and strategic drain placement are essential.  Installing a curbless shower as a part remodel can be challenging because the framing structure and layout of the bathroom may not allow for the proper amount of slope.  Sometimes the best choice is to use a smaller curb that is easier to step over, but still keeps the water in the shower.

Don’t Overlook Shower Door Width

If you or a loved one uses a wheelchair, the shower entrance needs to be wide enough to accommodate it. ADA guidelines recommend at least a 32-inch clear opening, which typically requires a 33-inch-wide door.

The Difference Between Clear and Low-Iron Glass

Did you know that there’s more than one type of glass used for shower doors?

Here’s an overview of two common types of glass: clear and low-iron.

Clear Glass: The Standard Starting Point

The most common base selection for frameless shower doors is clear glass. Standard clear glass has a slight greenish tint, which becomes noticeable especially when viewed from the edge or against light-colored tiles. This tint is due to the iron content in the glass.

Low-Iron Glass: A Cleaner, Truer Look

If you’re using lighter tiles or want to ensure your tile colors show through clearly, low-iron glass may be a better option. This type of glass has reduced iron content, eliminating the greenish hue and allowing for a brighter, more accurate view of your shower's interior. It's ideal for those seeking a crisp, clean aesthetic.

3 Ways to Fix a Loose Shower Door Handle

Looking for a step-by-step guide to fixing a shower door handle?

If your shower door handle is loose, it could cause more serious damage to your shower door, and may eventually require replacement. Here are a few ways you can fix a loose handle to prevent further damage:

Fixing the Handle by Adjusting the Screws

1. Use your Allen key to remove the handle by loosening both sets of screws. 
2. Tighten the second set of screws (holding the post in place) with your Philips head screwdriver until they’re snug.
3. Slide the handle back on and tighten the set screws back into place.

Fixing the Handle by Adjusting the Washers

If that doesn't correct your problem, there could be some plastic washers that are located between the handle and the glass that might have been lost. Once you’ve removed the handle, see if they’ve fallen out somewhere inside the handle and put them back in place. They could also be cracked or broken, in which case you would need to replace them. 

Getting Replacement Parts

If the handle was loose for a long time, then the post that we saw earlier may have become so worn that the set screw can't get a good grip on it, in which case either the post or the whole handle will need to be replaced. If you need to replace something, simply come to Wolverine Glass and we’ll help you get a replacement. Intro to Fixing a Shower Door Handle

Does your shower door jiggle every time you touch it?

At Wolverine Glass, we want to help keep your shower door looking as good and performing as well as the day it was first installed. Our technicians are ready to support you with adjustments, repairs, and any other maintenance needs for your shower door. In this article, we'll discuss how to fix a loose shower door handle.

It's important to fix a loose shower door handle early so that it doesn’t lead to damage that’s much harder to fix. A loose handle can wear down, making it unfixable and needing to be replaced completely. The handle could also move around, causing scratches on your glass. 

You will need a couple of tools to fix a shower door handle…

1. A Philips head screwdriver

2. An Allen key

Note: You’ll want to be careful that you don't scratch your glass with your Allen key, so you want to use a little bit of patience, and you’ll also want to be careful that you don't strip the inside of that set screw either. For the same reason, we also recommend using hand tools instead of power tools.

The most likely cause for a loose door handle is that one of the two sets of screws has become loose. So where are those two sets of screws? 

There’s a set of screws that holds a post on both ends of the handle, and then another set of screws that holds one of the handles onto that post.

Fresh Finishes

What are the current trending bathroom finishes?

This past year of Ann Arbor bathroom remodels has seen more interest in newer finishes, such as brushed bronze or champagne bronze. There is a whole spectrum of these bronze and gold type finishes that are becoming more popular for bathroom hardware. Unfortunately, there isn’t the same type of standardization one might find with other finishes such as chrome, brushed nickel, or black. Each manufacturer may have slightly different shades of gold/bronze for their finish, which might not be a perfect match when combined with other types of hardware. 

Because these finishes are relatively new, not all shower hardware styles and types are available in this finish. Homeowners should consider this early on in their planning process so they are able to get the complete finished look that they are looking for in their bathroom hardware.

Have you heard of a curbless shower?

A newer trend in Ann Arbor bathroom remodels is customers converting their existing shower, which might have a standard curb along its perimeter, to one that is curbless. This means there is no barrier between the shower floor and the floor of the rest of the bathroom. People do this for a number of reasons. Some customers are thinking about how they will use the bathroom as they age, and would prefer to remove a potential trip hazard. Many other customers simply like the seamless look.  

A frameless shower door can be used in these situations just like ones with curbs; however, curbless showers can have trouble with water leakage if great care is not taken when the floor is tiled to ensure there is proper slope for drainage.
