Here are two ways that you can make your bathroom more accessible for wheelchair users:

Consider a Curbless Shower for Easy Access

Curbless walk-in showers are an increasingly popular choice for aging in place designs. With no step or threshold to navigate, they make it easier to enter and exit—whether you're using a walker, wheelchair, or simply want to reduce tripping hazards.

Just keep in mind: curbless showers require careful planning to prevent water from escaping into the rest of the room. A properly sloped floor and strategic drain placement are essential.  Installing a curbless shower as a part remodel can be challenging because the framing structure and layout of the bathroom may not allow for the proper amount of slope.  Sometimes the best choice is to use a smaller curb that is easier to step over, but still keeps the water in the shower.

Don’t Overlook Shower Door Width

If you or a loved one uses a wheelchair, the shower entrance needs to be wide enough to accommodate it. ADA guidelines recommend at least a 32-inch clear opening, which typically requires a 33-inch-wide door.

This can be a challenge in smaller bathrooms, especially where space is tight around vanities or toilets. In these cases, significant layout adjustments may be needed to meet accessibility standards without compromising usability.

Overview of ShowerGuard Glass

Have you ever heard of ShowerGuard glass?

In our last blog, we talked about clear glass and low-iron glass. Another popular option is ShowerGuard glass—a premium product with a permanent, invisible protective coating. This coating is fused into the surface of the glass during manufacturing and works by filling in the microscopic peaks and valleys where water, soap scum, and minerals can collect.

The benefits?

Here’s an overview of two common types of glass: clear and low-iron.

Clear Glass: The Standard Starting Point

The most common base selection for frameless shower doors is clear glass. Standard clear glass has a slight greenish tint, which becomes noticeable especially when viewed from the edge or against light-colored tiles. This tint is due to the iron content in the glass.

Low-Iron Glass: A Cleaner, Truer Look

If you’re using lighter tiles or want to ensure your tile colors show through clearly, low-iron glass may be a better option. This type of glass has reduced iron content, eliminating the greenish hue and allowing for a brighter, more accurate view of your shower's interior. Hardware Options for Barn-Style Shower Doors

In our last blog, we went over the basics of barn-style shower doors. But what are your hardware
options for this style?

The glass options for barn-style shower doors are the same as for other frameless designs. However, the hardware selection is more limited—typically available in finishes like chrome, brushed stainless, and matte black.

For double sliding doors, it’s common to include a towel bar on each panel. Single sliding doors usually feature a back-to-back handle similar to those on other frameless doors. If you have a specific handle style in mind, we’re happy to explore options with you, though some styles may restrict full door movement.

Barn-Style Shower Doors

Have you ever heard of a “barn-style” shower door?

Barn door shower doors are a great option for small bathrooms or spaces where a swinging door isn’t practical. These doors offer a sleek, minimalistic look with streamlined hardware, similar to other frameless shower door styles.

When selecting a barn-style door, you can choose between two sliding panels or one sliding panel paired with a stationary panel. The best choice depends on the layout of your bathroom—particularly the location of your shower controls and any fixtures like vanities or toilets near the door.

Ideally, you want to be able to open the door and reach the shower controls from outside the enclosure, allowing the water to warm up without being sprayed with cold water. In this case, a door with two sliding panels might give you the necessary flexibility.

If space is limited (for example, if there’s a vanity or toilet next to the shower), a single sliding panel with a stationary panel might be the better option. This design also helps prevent water from leaking out if the door is accidentally left ajar.
