Choosing the Right Glass for Your Mirrors

Are you shopping for a custom mirror for your home?

Want to make sure the mirror you buy is built to last?

Working with a reputable custom glass company guarantees that your mirror is built with safety, clarity, and longevity in mind.

Choosing the Right Glass for Your Mirrors

To maximize the light brought in by mirrors, it's important to choose high-quality glass. Here's why
partnering with a reputable glass company is essential:

  1. Clarity: High-quality glass provides a clear reflection and maximum light transmission. Inferior glass can distort images and reduce the effectiveness of mirrors in brightening your space.
  2. Durability: Investing in durable glass is a long-term investment. Quality glass is more resistant to failures of the reflective backing.
  3. Safety: Safety-backed glass is a must for large mirrors in areas that might be exposed to impacts or other hazards, like in a gym or fitness room.  The safety backing holds the glass together in case of breakage.

Are you trying to bring more light into your home?

Want to explore your options?

Full-length mirrors are not just for checking your outfit before you head out the door; they can also enhance the natural light inside your home!

Here's how:

  1. Reflecting Light: Full-length mirrors, strategically placed opposite windows or light sources, can bounce natural light around the room.
  2. Creating Illusion of More Space: When natural light reflects off them, it contributes to a sense of openness and airiness. This is particularly valuable in smaller rooms.

Mirror Hanging Options

Did you recently purchase a custom mirror? Not sure how to hang it?

Is your mirror currently resting on the counter in your bathroom?

Hanging a mirror properly ensures it doesn’t fall and keeps it from potential water damage when left to sit on a bathroom vanity.

Here are a few methods to hang your mirror:

Clear Block and Glue – This is the most straightforward and affordable way to install your mirror.  It requires a solid, level surface on which the mirror can rest; for bathroom remodels, this is commonly
the backsplash on the vanity.  Small clear blocks are used to cushion and provide separation between the mirror and the backsplash.  The backsplash supports the weight of the mirror and the mirror glue holds the mirror against the wall.

Hang Its – A “Hang It” is a special metal bracket that is attached to the back of a mirror and allows the mirror to hang like a picture frame.  This product secures the mirror to the wall without any additional metal clips or frame around the edges of the mirror.  For mirrors that have bevels or other edge treatments, this avoids having the mirror hardware interrupt the edge treatment.

Wood frame - A mirror can be secured within a wooden frame or structure similar to a picture frame.  As with all the previous methods, the weight of the mirror has to be supported by more than mirror glue.

Thing to Keep in Mind When Hanging Your Large Mirrors

Did you just find the best place to hang your large mirror?

A custom mirror is a great way to finish off a bathroom remodel or at-home gym installation because it can make a room feel brighter and more open.

There are a few things you should keep in mind when choosing how and where you plan to hang your mirror!

Keep in Mind when Hanging Your Mirror

Mirror glue and mastic are adhesives specifically formulated for use with mirrors.  Other generic or general-purpose construction adhesives may secure the mirror to the wall, but the chemicals in those adhesives will eat away at the mirror backing over time.  Eventually, you will have black spots across your mirror wherever you used this adhesive.  Always use a mirror-specific glue/mastic.

If the mirror is in a space with a higher risk of impact or breakage, like a fitness room, you might want to use a product called safety backing; Safety backing is a special tape that is applied to the back of the mirror that will hold the mirror intact if it gets damaged.

How to Maintain Your Mirrors

Mirrors Ann Arbor

Moisture is the primary cause of mirror failure. The moisture in the surrounding air causes the silvering on the back of the mirror to degrade which leads to black spots. These spots typically begin along the edges of the mirror and will continue to grow and spread. The best way to prevent this damage from occurring is to keep mirrors in locations with low humidity. That is a tough task considering that most people use mirrors in their bathrooms which often get steamy from hot showers and baths. Here are some simple tips on how to reduce the risk of damage:

  1. Use your exhaust fan when taking a shower and keep it running for several minutes after your shower is done. This helps to evacuate the moisture from the bathroom and minimize the risk of condensation on the mirror.
  2. Keep bathroom supplies (e.g. lotion bottles, soap, etc) away from the edge of the mirror. These containers can trap water up against the mirror.
  3. Avoid leaving standing water on a countertop or backsplash. If the mirror is resting directly on the countertop or the backsplash, this standing water will degrade the silvering.

At Wolverine Glass, we apply a special sealant along all of the edges of the custom mirrors we produce to help protect against moisture.  We often are asked to take a mirror and cut the moisture damaged edges off so the customer can continue to use the mirror. This can work to keep a mirror in use for many years to come; however, it could also just be a temporary solution as the rest of the mirror has had similar exposure to moisture and may only be a matter of time until the rest of the mirror begins to show the same problems.

Types of Mirrors

Mirrors Ann Arbor
Are you looking for a new mirror in your home?

Do you know your options?

Custom mirrors can be a great addition to your home. Mirrors are commonly used in bathrooms, but can also be used to set off other spaces in your home such as a fitness area or behind a bar. Besides just the functional uses in the bathroom, mirrors are a great way to make spaces appear larger.

Mirrors are available in common shapes and sizes that can be hung in your home almost like a picture. Rectangular, square, and oval shapes are the most common, but our custom mirrors can be made to fit almost any unique space in your home. For example, an entire wall can be covered with a mirror.

When considering a custom mirror project, there are several factors to consider. Mirrors can come in a variety of the thickness from 1/8” to ¼”.  ¼” thick mirrors are the most common mirrors used in homes. The edges of the mirror can be finished in a variety of ways. The most basic finish is a ground edge. A ground edge involves sanding the cut edges of the mirror to produce a rough, non-reflective finish along the edges of the mirror. Next, there is a flat polish edge that can be placed on the mirror. A flat polish provides a smooth, finished surface on all the edges and a slight bevel. Finally, a larger beveled edge can be placed around the entire perimeter. The bevel can range in size from ½” to 1-1/2” or more. This can be a very attractive way to set off the mirror with a more finished appearance albeit at a higher cost.

There are a couple of options for custom mirrors that can add a unique and special look. Mirrors are available with Low Iron glass. Regular glass, including the glass used in mirrors, has a greenish tint to it. Low Iron glass removes that greenish tint and provides a reflection that shows off more true colors. Antique mirror glass is also available that attempts to replicate the aged and distressed look of vintage mirror glass. This glass can be used as a replacement for a mirror in antique furniture or to add unique character in a room
